It could well be that there was originally a lot more gasoline on the floor and the puddle was just the remains after most of the leak had evaporated. The smell of gasoline in the garage was overpowering and a mechanic who drove me home after I took the car to a repair shop checked out the puddle and verified that it was gasoline. If this gasket is bad then the tank will leak when it's full but it won't leak if it 3/4 full. That night I went into the garage and was overwhelmed by the smell of gasoline fumes. I then drove straight home (6 blocks) and parked the car in the garage. I didnt top the tank off or overfill it - and the temperature outside, while hot, was certainly cooler than it's been many other times when I've filled the tank over the years. I went to the same gas station that I've used for the past 15 years. I filled my tank up the day before yesterday. My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport has been a great car for 20 years but I have a problem now that's a bit concerning.
